The launch of Mexico in a Bottle SF ticket sales signifies the end of my summer “break” as we begin ramping up for both that event and San Diego. It has been a quiet summer and for the first time in years, I was pretty much home based, basking in the glory of a backyard garden full of beautiful wildflowers and ripening tomatoes and peppers. You could call this respite a survival mechanism against the growing desmadre around us. I am sad to see this quiet time come to a close but I am looking forward to not only the events ahead, but also what we have in store editorially speaking.
Last week focused on the importance of semillas del pulque and the future of pulque.. This week we have a great tour of Mexico City’s pulquerias from Leigh Thelmadatter. She looks at the history of pulquerias and what the challenges are facing them amidst a resurgence of interest. And I have a new piece out that makes a case for cremas, a most dismissed and overlooked category amongst so many mezcal drinkers. But there is history and a market for them if we can look beyond whatever biases we might have.
Finally, one last call for our reader survey. If you haven’t already, please take a couple of minutes to answer some questions. There is a lot going on in the world of media and your opinions and thoughts are incredibly valuable, especially when it comes to how we can better serve you.
Saludos,
Susan and the Mezcalistas Team

MEZCAL EVENTS
SPOTLIGHT: MEZCAL LOTERIA
You know how to make a game of lotería even more fun? Add mezcal! Our version of lotería (think Mexican bingo but with images) is a fun, bilingual and interesting dive into the world of mezcal. Each card, hand designed by Oaxacan artist and designer Cristina Mariana Garcia, represents an aspect of mezcal production and culture. Gather friends and family for an afternoon or night of friendly competition accompanied by your favorite mezcales. For you bar and restaurant folks, this is great for any game night or hosting special events. We’ve had a great time (and terrific turnout!) doing lotería nights in Oaxaca, Chicago, Oakland and Washington, DC.
In addition to individual game sales, we also have special case pricing. Games can be resold on your platforms or stores and make for great corporate giveaways and gifts. And they can be a fun training tool. Reach out for details.
